What is Protein?
- Proteins are large, complex molecules that play many critical roles in the body. They do most of the work in cells and are required for the structure, function, and regulation of the body’s tissues and organs.
- Proteins are made up of thousands of smaller units called amino acids, which are attached to one another in long (branched) chains. There are 20 different types of amino acids that can be combined to make a protein. The sequence of amino acids determines each protein’s unique 3D structure and its specific function.
Forms of Protein
- Whey Protein: This tends to be the most popular form of protein consumed by athletes. Whey is considered by many to be the best source of protein due to its high BCAA profile and high biological value. Whey protein can be split into into 3 categories: whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate and whey protein blends. Whey protein isolate is seen to be the most popular due to the fact it is processed to remove fat and lactose, delivering an outstanding 90% + of pure protein.
- Soy Protein: Derived from soy beans, soy protein has a minimum protein content of 90% on a moisture-free basis. It is made from defatted soy beans which has had most of the nonprotein components, fats and carbohydrates removed. Soy protein is also suitable for vegans.
As well as these two forms of protein there are many other forms available on the market that all have numerous forms of research conducted, however these seem to be the two most popular forms.
How does it affect the body?
- Protein is the key to building and maintaining all types of body tissue, including muscle. It contains amino acids, which are essentially the building blocks used for the growth and repair of our muscles. Protein can also assist in weight loss and the toning up of muscles for those who use the supplement.
Where can Protein Supplements be bought and in what forms?
- All forms of protein can be bought on various websites, HPNutrition and BulkPowders being the main ones athletes seem to visit.
